A slope draining toward the garage is one of those problems that just sits there. You walk past it every day, maybe step around a muddy patch or two, and the space never actually does anything for you. That was the situation here - a narrow side yard that was losing ground to poor drainage and wasted potential.
We started with full site prep and grading. The existing slope had to go. Getting the grade right before anything else goes in is the kind of step that doesn't get noticed when it's done well - but you definitely notice when it's skipped. We cut down into the soil and established a clean, level base to build from.
Once the ground was prepped, we built a block retaining wall to hold back the raised soil on the fence side. That wall does the real work - it locks in the grade change, keeps everything stable, and gave us a clean vertical edge to work against. Fresh mulch was laid behind it to finish off the bed. Then came the concrete sidewalk running the full length of the space, giving solid, even footing from the garage all the way to the backyard.
The outdoor lighting built into the retaining wall is what takes it from functional to sharp. Each light sits recessed into the block face, throwing just enough light to make the path safe and easy to navigate after dark without being over the top. It's the kind of detail that gets noticed.
What used to be a muddy, sloped strip is now a clean, purposeful walkway. No more awkward step-arounds. No more wasted space. Just a practical path with a finished look that actually adds something to the property.
